I have asked Latayne Scott to compose these questions for discussion on this important topic.
What links the two parts of reality? (Try to answer this without the following hint, which you may use if you need to: 1 Corinthians chapter 2.)

Excellent question! And I can answer that with at least four different things that link the two sides of reality together (reality being made of the invisible, the link, and the visible, being tridadic therefore). That first link and most important (one might be able to say) is the Holy Spirit. This is always His function *(among others). Another link would be revelation (the words of God revealed to us from his own mind). Faith would be another link (without it one cannot please God or do anything that could not be considered sin) and a forth would be language (or better said the manipulation of symbols). A couple other links might be offered but likely fit as subtructures to the others already listed (prayer, hope, love).
Man. this is a great concept to study! Not much is more important to understand. Ric Re: Re: How To Think Like A Christian: Linking the Parts of Reality

Ric,
I appreciate the clarity of your answer. Reminds me of the "3-D Model of Reality." Perhaps we can post that graphic to make it even easier to grasp. Thanks! - KL Re: Re: How To Think Like A Christian: Linking the Parts of Reality

Maybe the key into this link would be redemption. Through the sacrifice of our Saviour (kiwi spelling) and the acceptance of this sacrifice through baptism we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Revelation without redemption is condemnation. Faith not based on redemption is unfulfilled and blind leading to separation from God; and the last one I don't quite get....(Although I feel my brain stretching). Sharon

Good thinking, Ric. At the most basic level, it is the Holy Spirit who links the unseen purposes of God to our material (physical) circumstances. Can anyone give some specific Scriptural examples in which the Holy Spirit did that?

Well, without looking at the hint or any of the replies, I would have to say the Holy Spirit. Which is probably why a purely naturalistic worldview ends up denying that the immaterial is a part of reality. Actually the miss the entire boat because the material reality is subservient to the immaterial because it is dependent upon it - both for its origin as well as its continued existence. But it seems that one way we know this is true is because it is revealed truth given to us by the Holy Spirit.
Although that makes me wonder because Eastern worldviews tend to be anti-naturalism in that they deny the material as illusory and claim that only the immaterial exists. It is only in a theistic worldview that you have an acknowledgment of both. But how does an anti-naturalistic worldview (or even broader - just people in general) understand non-material reality without the revealing of the Holy Spirit. I suppose Romans 1 comes into play here - for God has made it plain to them - his invisible attributes and power - via Natural Revelation. That's right, Shawn. And we're going somewhere here with this discussion. We will explore later in much detail the layered elements that connect the seen part of reality to the unseen. But for right now the focus should be on the fact that the Holy Spirit is our guarantee of all that is unseen. Having such a guarantee means something significant about the relative importance of the unseen in decision making, for instance. Stay tuned -- we're getting there!
