Vacation Memories

Speaking of vacations, I've realized for a long time that children may forget a lot of things about their daily routine, but great memories of family vacations seem to last forever. (I wonder why? Because of the uninterrupted time with loved ones? Because of the radical detour from normal day-to-day patterns? Because of the fascination with the vacation itself - fishing, sightseeing, travel and the fun, unique activities?) What experiences come to your mind from vacations long ago?

I recall one camping trip to the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas when I was maybe 8 or so. We set up our tent and the family next to us came over and introduced themselves. They talked with my mom and dad for awhile, exchanging information about jobs and home towns etc... The man from the other tent said he worked for Campbells Soup at the time.. and I can remember my brother, sister and I went to sleep that night singing the "Mmmmm Good, Thats what Campbell's Soups are... mmm mmmm good" jingle.
My mom was praying the neighbors couldn't hear us, but he must have because he had a big grin on his face the next morning every time he looked at us. Kevin Re: Re: Vacation Memories

Kevin, that is such a neat memory. I did very little camping when I was growing up, but can see how that would be a very bonding experience for families.
When we rode the Blue Ridge Parkway on the motorcycle last year, we met the fellow who was taking the "four corrners" tour across the U.S. He was pulling a pop-up camper with his motorcycle. My idea of a great motorcycle trip is staying in a nice hotel at nights. That certainly is not "roughing it." - KL Re: Vacation Memories

My dad and his mother took me to Niagara Falls one summer while my brothers were away at band camp. Since we drove (there through the US; home through Canada), I was able to stop at every one of the Great Lakes and stick my feet in the water. At Lake Erie, I stepped right on a rusty fish hook on the rocks, and my dad had to dig it out with his pocket knife. Niagara was a blast, too! But what I remember most was stopping by these lakes. It was the biggest accomplishment of my life, at least I thought so.

My family (me, my sister, mom and dad) used to go down to Branson, MO every summer and camp. We would stay for about a week. I don't remember this particular thing but i saw a picture of it and it was so funny...When i was really little (like 3 i think) my mom took a picture of me peeing on a tree, and all you could see was my backside with my pants around my ankles. It was so funny!! OKay, that's all i got.

The very best vacation for me was the month we spent in the mountains of Arizona. We lived in Phoenix, and went to the mountains every summr to escape the heat. My mom, sister and I went for a month one year and Dad would come up on weekends. We stayed in a very rustic cabin, with no electricity, a wood burning stove, kerosene lamps, a butane frig, and an out house for convenience ha.
Best memories ever ! This was probably 1962 and I was maybe 9 or 10? Re: Vacation Memories
If you asked our children what were their most memorable vacations, I bet they'd say all the summers we went to ACMS -- it made an indelible impression on them, and anchored them in a Christian fellowship with believers across the country.
