Corey Callis is a good friend of Acappella Ministries and is always willing to help out.  As part of his college work, he asked to interview me for a class project.

    1. Why did you start a singing group?

I wanted to be involved in ministry, having worked with local churches.  However, I felt there was a lot of potential in music ministry that was untapped, so I started a full-time singing group.

    2. Why did you start an a cappella group instead of an instrumental group?

I grew up in non-instrumental churches and was very familiar and comfortable with a cappella music.  I believed there was a niche in contemporary a cappella music that was yet to be realized.

    3. What is better about non - instrumental music?

The lyric is what makes Christian music different.  With a cappella singing, it's usually all about the words, so the two make a nice combination.  In worship settings, I love the participatory aspect; a cappella singing only works well when everyone is involved.  It is not as conducive to spectators.

    4. What is better about instrumental music?

I love the expression that instrumentalists can bring to music.  I also love the intros, transitions, key changes and tags that are second nature for instrumentalists, yet complicated in a cappella settings.

    5. In recording, do you believe it is harder to produce an a cappella or instrumental CD and why?

It is more difficult to achieve sonic excellence with a cappella recordings because of the blend, tuning and execution complexities required for the human voice.  Secondly, the dynamic range is (in most cases) much more limited when compared to bass guitars, pianos, organs, keyboards, horns, percussion and strings, etc.

   6. How has a cappella music changed your life?

I believe the human voice is the greatest instrument of music ever created.  I am astonished by the versatility of sounds and music that can come from this flexible "instrument."  Giving my life to the exploration of the possibilities of a cappella music has blessed my life tremendously.

    7. How long have you been singing?

As long as I can remember.

    8. How do you feel others feel about a cappella / Acappella music?

Some people absolutely love it.  When exposed to quality a cappella music (especially "live"), most are amazed by it.  Some are prejudiced against it, including most radio programmers.  We are grateful for the letters we receive from fans around the world who are deeply touched by this music ministry.

    9. How does your family feel about you starting Clifty Studios / Anthony K. Music?

I am fortunate to have a family that has joined me on the journey all along the way.  We are blessed with talented children who enjoy the same passions.  Melissa recorded and mixed the last Acappella CD.  Kimberly took all the photos and sings with Melissa and Anthony in an a cappella group called Durant.  Anthony writes songs, including one on the latest Acappella CD, Radiance.  Allison sings on my praise team when we conduct seminars.

    10. Do you have any regrets about Acappella/ is there anything you wish you could change?

I'd love to expose the matchless potential of a cappella music to more people then ever before.  When people hear the current line-up of Acappella, they fall in love with the guys, their sound and their message.
