I hope this question inspires discussion – and this question is for everyone, not just worship ministers. I am aware of the fact that some of the most effective worship “leaders” do not have beautiful voices or musical skills. I also realize that more and more churches are hiring full-time worship ministers. In addition to leading and planning various worship services, he probably conducts rehearsals for several worship teams. Let’s say that this minister directs musicals for community outreach and assists with different youth singing groups. He organizes funeral singers and is a vital part of the church leadership staff.
Please forgive the simplicity of this exercise (there are so many other factors that could/should be considered), but let’s assume a church of 1,000 members wants to hire a worship minister. Let’s simply divide the responsibilities and priorities of the full-time worship minister into three areas:
Musical and directing skills
Administrative and team-building skills
Spiritual growth and development
Rate these in order of importance, and if you like, assign a percentage next to each in creating your ideal worship minister balance.
1. _________ ___%
2. _________ ___%
3. _________ ___%
I’m sure you are aware that there are extremely talented singers who are not “in tune” with God. You may also know a very spiritual and godly person who cannot manage his way out of a paper bag (not someone you want to put in charge of multiple programs.)
Again, this is just your opinion and food for thought. List the three areas in order of importance, assign a percentage (if you choose) and add optional comments. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
