It’s happening everywhere . . . the slow decline, and in some cases, disappearance of four-part harmony. A fellowship once known for it’s beautiful, S.A.T.B. a cappella singing is slowly fading into the prevailing practice of a much less participatory, and in some cases, low - monotone congregational worship.
What is causing this steady decline? Hymnal usage being replaced by the projected screen? Lack of training? Arrangements not readily available? Lack of emphasis? Whatever the reason – it is not too late. The tribal language of thousands of Christians can and should be passed on to the next generation through a new restoration movement.
What can we do?
- Place more emphasis on the singing in our worship.
- Encourage everyone to learn how to find their voice and sing their particular part.
- Educate Christians in reading music and consider using The Paperless Hymnal.
- Utilize volunteers to assist in the classes, seminars and special singings.
- Train worship leaders who will “disciple” others in this endeavor.
- Provide sheet music when introducing new songs.
- Encourage worshippers to listen to quality worship music.
The experience of enthusiastic, heart-felt singing in worship is something far beyond description. Heaven is ringing with the jubilant echoes of praise. Would you join me in keeping this language alive?
