I grew up in West Tennessee.  I currently live in Middle Tennessee.  I work with a church in East Tennessee.

Some of you native Tennesseans will remember long ago when the state slogan was "The three states of Tennessee."  Remember the welcome signs bordering our state that actually pictured divisions of West, Middle and East?  I assume the slogan was changed for appropriate reasons.  Perhaps some decided that emphasizing three personalities of our state would only promote disunity.  However, upon closer inspection, people will be pleased to discover the unique characteristics of each "region" if you will.

I love Tennessee.  It's a great place to live and raise a family.  Paris, Tennessee is a special, hometown holding an extra measure of small-town charm.  West of the Tennessee River (the river that flows north) and east of the mighty Mississippi, you'll find the western section of the state that is obviously flatter than the middle and eastern sections.  Growing up in the west, it was not uncommon to see cotton fields and numerous bar-b-que stands.

Nashville has provided a taste of what a metropolitan life has to offer.  Concerts, shopping and entertainment options are dazzling, even in a city the size of Nashville.  There are enough churches available that a dedicated "church-hopper" could visit a different church every week without repeating for years.  The landscape is prominently characterized by rolling hills, common throughout Middle Tennessee.  My family really loves living in Nashville (or, to be more exact, the small town of Goodlettsville - similar to Paris, yet a suburb of Nashville.)

But working with the very special Farragut church of Christ has introduced us to life in beautiful East Tennessee.  I can honestly say that the mountain scenery is becoming more and more captivating and enjoyable.  I was introduced to the mountains of East Tennessee as my Mom is from this part of the state.  In the midst of all the mountain ranges, there are no shortages of rivers, lakes and parks.  What a beautiful place!  We have found a seemingly endless network of the best motorcycling roads in America, coupled with outstanding photo opportunities.  And the most important aspect - the people are warm and friendly.

If you've never been to Tennessee, I hope you get a chance to visit someday.  You'll quickly find why we are proud to call this our home.

In continuing my development in photography, I captured this time-lapse shot of Knoxville last week.

Christmas at Farragut . . .

At Farragut (Knoxville, TN) this morning, we truly celebrated Christmas.
I have lived on this planet for a half century now.  I have grown up in the church, but cannot remember a candle service during a Sunday assembly.  (I know this may sound strange to some of our readers of other traditions.)

I have been so blessed to work with great ministry teams at churches I have served.  Like Madison, Farragut has a wonderful ministry team.  Daniel Harris, our pulpit minister (what a great man) opened the celebration with a thought-provoking introduction.  He shared  his experience of growing up as a young child in a church which refused to celebrate Christmas.  When he asked the obvious question (a young mind would be thinking): "Why not?"  -  he was told definitively, "We do not know the exact date of Christ's birth."

His response was very appropriate.  Daniel asked, "If no one knew when YOUR exact birthday was, wouldn't you STILL want others to celebrate it at some time?"

I'm very thankful, that at least one time of the year, the majority of our society is more than willing to acknowledge the birth of the King of Kings!  Daniel shared how he loves so many traditions of the church of Christ; but one tradition he is not fond of is the refusal to celebrate Christ's birth at Christmas.  (Again, I realize some readers of this blog are perplexed and  scratching their heads on this one.)  Don't all groups have their unique idiosyncrasies?

Teenagers were actively involved in leading the service this morning including praise team, public reading of Scripture and an outstanding communion message.  We enjoyed going with the teens to sing Christmas carols earlier this week in Farragut.

Daniel asked me to pick a presentation song to share at this morning's service.  It has been many years since I sang "Mary Did You Know?" (for a Christmas drama.)  Anthony and Melissa harmonized with me as I witnessed tears flowing in response to the miracle of our Lord's birth and the implications of the incarnation.  I realized once again how powerful that song is in delivering Gospel truth.  Don't you just love Christmas songs?  We sang most of the standard favorites, but "Mary Did You Know?" has already become a contemporary standard.

The solos were just a small portion of the singing today.  One visitor, who normally attends a Community Church, was mesmerized by the high level of participation of the entire congregation in the singing.  Now THAT is a tradition we need to export to every group and to everyone!  I think I know of some congregational workshops that are designed for that specific purpose.  ;)

The entire congregation came to the front during the candle lighting ceremony as we sang numerous Christmas songs.  It is such a blessing to worship with the church at Farragut.  How refreshing it is to participate in their zeal for worship and desire to honor God in fresh and meaningful ways.  This is also evident in their various approaches to celebrating the Lord's table.

Not only did we celebrate the birth of Jesus, but we were making sweet memories for families and children of all ages.  What a delight to see the young ones fully engaged in the wonder of this experience.

Thanks to Vaughn Williams for taking these photos.

I am so energized about today - how that for the first time in fifty years, I'm enjoying the complete freedom to celebrate Christ in this very moving and special manner.  One of my favorite elders shared these words with me this morning: "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom."  Of course, I don't mean to offend anyone who would disagree with this approach to worship.  I thank you for allowing me to share my joy and our wonderful experience of today's celebration.  However you celebrate this season, may you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

While seeking opportunities to improve my photography skills, we came across this friendly man making music near the Parthenon in Nashville.

Many have pointed out how common it is for "locals" to overlook the treasures in their own backyard (wherever they may be.)  This was brought to my attention a few years back when an elder from North Carolina was visiting.  His enthusiasm and knowledge of Nashville surpassed my own to a point that motivated me to discover the unique offerings of our area.  Have you heard of people living in central Florida who have never visited Disney World?  What would you say about me never attending a Grand Old Opry performance?

Last week, our Brazilian friends came to spend some time with our family and Acappella.  We enjoyed taking them to the treasured landmarks of Nashville - including the Parthenon.

Anderson Ramos, his wife Quelia and sister Evelyn seemed to have a great time in middle Tennessee.   In addition to the Parthenon, our visits included seeing the Christmas decorations at the Opryland Hotel.

The Bi-Centennial mall is very interesting park to visit.  I took this shot by the globe in the World War II memorial in the park.

I hope you enjoy the extra photos.  Our daughter's passion for photography has rubbed off on me as I'm even more excited about documenting our trips.

Sunday night, I was utterly amazed by the children of the Farragut church and their presentation of "The Mystery of the Manger."  I was thinking, it would be impressive for them to memorize two or three songs - but this musical was packed with almost an hour of outstanding singing, choreography and acting,  complete with a costume change.  You'd have to see it to believe it!

I cannot get over the superb quality of this presentation.  Talented Farragut members directed this effort with amazing skill. These children raised the bar so high on children's productions I can't see how they could improve!  Makes me proud to be part of the Farragut Church.   I'm also excited about the upcoming crop of talented singers.
