Recently we flew over it and snapped this photo of this facility nestled beside the winding Cumberland River.

Can someone share why this plant never went on-line?

Several reasons, the cost of money in the eighties, reduction in demand growth as a result of conservation, and the bad image of nuclear power after the Three Mile Island Accident in 1979. There are some other unfinished nuclear power stations in TVA's inventory, the include Watts Bar Unit 2, Bellifont Units 1 & 2. The tide is beginning to change. Just last week TVA contracted to finish Watts Bar Unit 2, and is thinking about Bellifont as well. This follows TVA returning all three Brown's Ferry Units to power earlier this year.

Could it have something to do with the fact that it's adjacent to the place that Algore claims to have been his boyhood home?
Not that he spent any time there, mind you... Re: Nuclear Power Plant In Hartsville, TN

Every time I fly for Northwest from Detroit to Nashville, the arrival corridor (I think it is called the GUITAR Arrival) takes us by this power plant. I am reminded of how this energy crisis we are in.... is a SELF CREATED CRISIS. We have not built any nuclear plants or any refineries in this country in many, many years yet our population has increased by millions of people. When are the ignorant ********** in this country going to get on the phone to their representatives and say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH ******, DRILL FOR OUR OWN OIL, BUILD MORE SAFE NUCLEAR PLANTS AND FOR ***** SAKE WE NEED MORE REFINERIES.
If this doesn't happen, we will fade into 3rd world status as China and the NEW Soviet Union leave us in their dust. That plant near Hartsville should be FINISHED IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!

Hey Anonymous,
We should try to become more independent with regard to energy. The only problem with the means by which you and many others (including both Obama and McCain) offer as a solution fail to address our concerns about our independence. In other words, by using nuclear energy, America is not independent from other countries in that we have to mine uranium abroad to bring it home and to turn it into energy. Another interesting fact about nuclear energy is that it is subsidized. In other words, tax payers have to pay to keep them going because investors won't touch it. It seems that it is too risky. The half built plants scattered about are certainly testament to that. |
