The implication would be that an organism is constantly in a state of flux and yet remains totally connected with all of its members/parts. Organism sounds more static and dry.

Leadership is often thought of as getting people to catch on to the leader's vision. In the case of the church we don't see the ultimate leader or vision coming from men but from God and that makes a difference.

In an organism approach, the leadership would have to be aware of change and how to adapt to that change. They would have to have the vision to see how those changes will affect the future, which are healthy to the organism and which are maladaptive.

A dear friend reminded me that it isn't "leadership" it is "servantship" and when churches forget that, that is when troubles come. The body doesn't have one part that rules the rest. Each part serves the rest. The eyes keep you from hurting the toes. The toes help walk the body to feed the stomach. The stomach works to pull nutrients to feed the brain. The brain operates the heart. The heart is God's desire. You get the idea....

Servant-leadership is a term that is thrown around a lot and for good reason. It is very biblical. Elders are supposed to be shepherds. Shepherds do have a responsibility to give guidance. It is not that they are ruling over or have an iron fist. When elders get that idea trouble follows shortly after.

It is so sad to witness the approach many take to leadership in the body of Christ. In many cases, they attempt to lead from the top down in the most corporate and efficient business manner. (Emphasis on the "business model.")
