Now that I'm traveling more than ever, it has become unmistakably clear that the need for enthusiastic, heart-felt worship is tremendous. The byproduct of encouraging 100% participation in four-part harmony is not only the beautiful sound, but the manner in which everyone is drawn into offering their best gift to the Lord.
![]() Great a cappella congregational singing stands or falls in direct proportion to the level of participation of the church. In this setting, you cannot rely on others to do your worship/singing for you. May the leaders of the church do whatever is necessary to mobilize and encourage God's people to freely praise Him as He deserves. It's our choice. It is the natural response of a grateful people. Though not mandatory, it is only natural, if not inevitable. Worshiping the Creator is our eternal privilege. Why not enjoy it this side of eternity too? Monday, August 27

We enjoyed a very positive weekend with many brothers and sisters from Southern Georgia, Northern Florida and South Carolina at the Central Avenue Church in Valdosta.

All of us have special people who bless and enrich our lives. Gary Moyers is one of those persons who has truly blessed my life.
![]() * Gary taught High School Choir in Crane, Texas from 1986 to 1988. http://garymoyers.blogspot.com * He joined Acappella and worked (both on the road and in the home office) for a total of fifteen years. * After Acappella, Gary served as Minister for the church in Corpus Christi, Texas. * Gary is currently serving as the Worship Minister for the Golf Course Road Church of Christ in Midland, Texas. He tells me they are planning a "Streams" with Ken Young on September 15. As some of you know, Golf Course Road was Ken's former church home. The new church building project in Midland sounds fascinating. Here is some of what Gary told me: " We should be completed on our new building and totally moved in by late September. It's really going to be an amazing place. It will have a
MASSIVE commons area for people to mill around. It will look something
like a hotel lobby on steroids. Think one wing of the Opryland Hotel.
That kind of scope. The center piece of the commons area will be a
running water baptistery. Out front for everyone to see with seating
and plants, etc. That will be our "Ebenezer." Connected and open to the commons area will be a fellowship area that will be used by the Harvest Cafe, a local eating place here in town. They are opening up a 2nd store inside our building to serve the community. Lots of coffees, pastries, breads, rolls, etc. WIFI hotspot. We hope to pull in a lot of the community just with that. We will also have three very nice small auditoriums with state of the art tech. One for 5-6 grade, one for 3-4 grade, and one for 1-2. Behind each auditorium are breakout rooms for classes and small groups. We will run concurrent classes and worship for the kids as we have worship in the big room. These rooms will be put to use throughout the week for adult stuff, as they are perfect for movies, lectures, small concerts, etc. Then, if everything passes next week (the final word), we will begin tearing apart our auditorium to rebuild in-the-round..." Sounds like a lot is going on in Midland, Texas. Again, I'd like to share the web address of Gary's podcasts on a cappella Christian music. http://www.PitchPipePro.com Thanks Mo and Sherri for being such a blessing! Thursday, August 23

We were blessed last week by the Heritage Church in Keller, Texas. Karise Cheatham has been telling me we need to visit Saltgrass and we finally got to do just that. Jim Hackney treated us to a special meal at this fine Texas restaurant.
![]() ![]() But the trip was not complete until we made our way to Pappasito's in Fort Worth. Notice on the sign that they speak English. That's a plus. ![]() This chain is really doing well. They have a Canjun restaurant called Pappadeaux, another called Pappa Burgers and in Houston they have Pappa Seafood. I forgot if there were any others. Perhaps a Pappa Sushi? Ha. ![]() Notice on the clock that it was 9:30 PM as we arrived. For someone who is used to eating an early dinner (5:00 P.M.) this constituted a late night, but well worth the trip. Every small town wants to be known for something. Marion, Ohio, north of Columbus, sports a popcorn museum. Marion also happens to be the home of arguably the worst U.S. President of all time. However, I will remember Marion as the home of a friendly congregation, drawing members from several surrounding counties.

This last poll dealt with Sunday evening assemblies. Six different congregations were represented in the responses.
Of those, five congregations (83%) have some form of activity on Sunday evenings, leaving one congregation (17%) that does not utilize the time slot. Those five congregations that use Sunday evenings do so for a wide variety of reasons: o Various formats during the month(normal service, song service, small groups, classes, guest speakers) o Sunday Bible classes o Small groups o Smaller worship service, same style as Sunday morning o Different style of worship service Interesting ideas for our church leaders to ponder, as we consider what would be an effective use of time in our own communities. -JP Friday, August 17

Yesterday on our "stopover" at home, my car registered an outside temperature of 113 humid degrees! 105 and 107 was the official weather report in Nashville and I don't remember things being that hot before. This feels more like Phoenix, but with much more humidity.
Our flight to Ohio was only about 42 minutes, but when we arrived at Marion, we felt like we had transitioned seasons. It was so nice enjoying the cool breeze and seeing the green grass (we've been experiencing a draught.) Russell and Diane Howard are very hospitable in taking care of us. Russell was one of my Bible Major classmates at Freed Hardeman in Nineteen hundred and something? He has been preaching at Marion for 18 years! He's another minister that I admire who has persevered and made a tremendous difference in one place over time. More later. . .

![]() One of the greatest blessings is receiving encouraging feedback from people who have been blessed by music and song. Here's a message we just received from David Garrett: I can't begin to explain how much your music has encouraged me and my fellow soldiers while deployed in Iraq. Before I departed, my family and I contacted Keith and explained that I wanted to take Acappella's music with me overseas. Keith sent me a collection of CDs to take, as well as extra copies of the new Radiance CD to give to fellow soldiers. We attended the concert in West Memphis, Arkansas before I left in July 2006. We met the guys and got autographs on the new CD. I took the music with me to Iraq and it started a trend. Pretty soon more and more soldiers in my unit were asking for copies. This led to bible studies, and soon to Worshipping together at the Oasis Church of Christ in Tallil, Iraq where we converted a tent into a place of worship. Both Army and Air Force soldiers were fortunate enough to not only hear God's word in song, but to also Worship in spirit and in truth. I just want to thank you for all that you've done for me, my soldiers, and my family. My son who was only 5 months old when I left is now 2 and knows every song. I am home from Iraq now and currently serving as the Youth Minister at the Ross Road Church of Christ in Memphis, TN. Your Brother In Christ, David Garrett 1LT, Infantry And thank you, David, and all the people in uniform who serve our country! I appreciate this encouraging letter. Thursday, August 16

If you follow my commentaries (and rantings), you'll hear me complain about churches who invest millions of dollars into buildings, only to think about acoustics and sound AFTER the fact -- when it is too late to correct. Hello? Why do we assemble together? And, in which activity is everyone expected to participate? Singing, of course. Acoustics, especially for an a cappella congregation should be of paramount consideration and perhaps the first item studied in planning a new facility.
Acoustics that work well for bands, electronic sound systems and spoken word, may be the opposite of what is best for resounding and vibrantly-ringing a cappella singing. Our hats are off to the Heritage Church. What a vision. They designed a multi-purpose facility with fellowship and multiple uses in mind. In addition to the church, the community uses their building. They plan all types of activities for constant use of their facility, but none more important than worship. They spent $250,000 on the audio-video system alone. Thank goodness they recognized the importance. No wonder they are growing like crazy. Heritage experienced eight adult baptisms this past Sunday. While receiving the tour of their facility and meeting their outstanding staff, I saw a bulletin board listing all the expecting mothers in their congregation (a church that is composed of so many young families.) It looked like the number was approaching 20! This church is growing in many ways. ![]() The entire church prayed over the ground on which this building stands. While it was being constructed, they assigned different members to go each day to pray for the use of this facility. Jim Hackney prayed in a cow pasture, close to where his future pulpit would be, when there were no other buildings anywhere in sight. Today, a full and well-planned community exists AROUND their building. It is great to see what can happen when people follow God's leading.

We are flying to Texas today to eat at Pappasito's. Oh, and we'll be leading worship while we are there too.
(Humor is a "funny" thing. You never know what will translate as being humorous in written form. Another oddity is how someone will say something in a private setting that does not come across as humorous, yet will say the exact same thing in a public speaking forum and come across as hilarious.) Hope to see some of you in Keller, Texas tonight! Tuesday, August 14

Acappella sang at the South MacArthur Church many times. I have been blessed to spend time with Grady King. I thought I'd pass on this message I received from him:
South MacArthur Church of Christ is seeking a worship/young adult minister. John and Wendy Ogren have moved to St. Paul, MN after 12 years at South Mac. John, as well as Mark Love are in the same PH.D program at Luther Seminary related to Congregational Missional Leadership. The “Young adult” aspect is yet to be define depending on the gifts, passions and ministry burden of the minister. We are engaged in a missional transformation process and I tell people that we are learning to accept our missional, rather than attractional identity and future. Being a mission church in our own community is challenging and exciting. The worship/young adult minister will not be a chaplain to the organization, rather someone who will lead in spiritual formation and missional equipping. Please contact me for further information of someone God brings to your mind. Blessings in Christ, Grady D. King Senior Minister, D. Min South MacArthur Church of Christ 1401 So. There is something about the tranquilizing effects of water. It has been a year since I've gotten to enjoy small watercraft on a lake.

![]() We live in G'ville (Goodlettsville) and have discovered another G'ville: Guntersville, Alabama. What a beautiful area - which happens to be the southern-most point of the Tennessee River before it turns northward toward the Ohio. Almost all rivers in the United States flow southward, but the Tennessee flows north. ![]() ![]() Joe Whitaker does a fantastic job in leading this congregation in very fervant and dynamic worship. The weekend proved again how wonderful praise can be when approached in an enthusiastic and fully particaptory spirit. In addition to working with leaders, conducting singing clinics and leading Sunday morning worship, another highlight of the weekend was spending time with the Whitaker family boating on the Tennessee River last night. After cutting the engine, we sang praises to God in the still of the evening on the flowing waters. ![]() The folks in Guntersville are very special people. We look forward to hearing more great things from this church family.

Travelers can't help but remember their first impression of the Caribbean people - namely, a laid-back attitude. I can recall Gary Moyers' first trip to the Caribbean as the road manager with Acappella. The Islanders' stark contrast in time management attitudes was literally a shock to his normal, highly-detailed and organized scheduling routine.
![]() Which leads me in an unusual way to the subject of stress. How much can we learn from people who don't seem to become anxious about situations that drive others crazy? There is entirely too much stress in my life. I realize that much of that stress is "self-inflicted." Do you have too much stress in your life? Does it affect your sleep, your attitude and well-being and your dealings with others? Do you "generate" stress in others? (a "carrier") How do you cope with and manage stress in your life? How much does diet and exercise help or hurt? How does extreme stress reflect upon our spiritual health? (This is a heavy topic for a Friday.) I appreciate your comments since I need extra help in this area. ******* Today is my baby girl's birthday. Allison is turning 18. Watch out universe - here she comes! When God was dispensing personality, He gave her an overabundant supply of a wonderful, energetic, kind, loving and beautiful spirit that makes her truly unique and a blessing to everyone who knows her. Next week, our firstborn child, Melissa will celebrate her birthday as well. Melissa is overflowing with creativity and talent and is another beautiful blessing from God who attracts friends and points them to Jesus. What a blessing to have four lovely children who make us proud to be parents! Also, though not in this picture, Allen Brantley makes me proud to be his father-in-law. ![]() You can tell this photo was not taken in today's 100 + degrees of heat. ******* On yet another note, this month I am celebrating ONE YEAR of being Star Bucks Coffee free! (Is that a special recovery group?) Gone are the days of my daily venti latte. My pocket book thanks me. The lower caffeine is a plus. Now, if I could only get off chocolate! (Now THAT would be a miracle.) ******* If you are in any of these areas in the next few weeks, please look us up: 8/11 - Guntersville, AL 8/15 - Keller, TX 8/18 - Marion, OH 8/25 - Valdosta, GA 9/01 - Frederick, MD 9/08 - Tulsa, OK 9/15 - Calgary, Canada 9/19 - Morgantown, WV 9/23 - Farragut, TN 9/27 - Newburgh, IN God is abundantly blessing the Praise & Harmony workshops.
