Contagious Happiness

A recently-released study concluded that smiling and happiness is indeed contagious. Are you surprised by the findings? Of course, I immediately thought about the worship leaders' role in "setting the tone" for celebration in the assembly. Do you believe that worship leaders should be trained the way we expect/demand ministers to be trained? If so, why do we "hire" preachers with years of college (including many with graduate-level training), yet the majority of our song leaders / worship leaders are untrained volunteers?

That's exactly why we began the Worship Leaders Institute. We have scheduled our next Institute for February 24 - 26. I'm the lead instructor and will be joined by several others who will work intensely with a limited number of qualified candidates. An emphasis will be placed on stage presence and worship planning. The institute includes video-taped labs and individualized instruction. I pray that more congregations will realize the importance of singing/worship and invest in their leaders. Space is limited. Keith,

We live in a very great time of communication. Video and Internet make training a vast audience almost child's play. I would love to see you produce a top of the line video series or online class for aspiring worship leaders. I think congregations would buy something like this for their worship leaders and teams. Even if this was foundation for a combined in person class to be held later so you could have the hands on training as well.

Just a thought.

When I was a kid in southeast Kansas, most churches I knew were too small to have anyone supported on staff. The preacher, song leader, everyone had to work a regular job. Yet, these guys still worked nights and weekends to ensure the church was taken care of. I remember my father and other guys using their own money to travel to "preaching schools", "singing schools" and "workshops" to become better equipped. Many churches may only have a budget for one guy...that normally would be the preacher (pulpit minister). Whenever budget cuts come around in the larger churches, it seems that the worship leader is one of the first to lose support. I guess my point here is that we need to do the best with whatever the resources we have. If a man is in a good position to better himself as a worship leader, they by all means he should attend singing schools and worship leader seminars. Churches should encourage this and assist financially, if possible.
