Photography has become a perfect hobby to combine with my grueling travel schedule. Although I began with the primary purpose of "documenting" our visits and journeys (not unlike how we like to document birthdays, graduations, parties and special family events), I have been trying to increase my "artistic" skills as a photographer. This blog is also a great outlet to discuss and share this subject.
Linda asked a question the other day about purchasing a nicer camera in order to photograph God's wonderful creation. In a different post, Bill shared a great web site with us that shares some great photos and insights. Here is a link to Ken Rockwell's message comparing a $150 camera to a $5,000 camera.
Are you like most people who use a camera every once in awhile to capture special moments? Or, are you a serious hobbyist who is focused upon increasing your skills?

Re: Do You Take Pictures?
You're a terrific photographer, Keith! In fact, so terrific that Moody Publishers is going to use your portrait of me in their catalogs regarding my upcoming book, The Latter-day Cipher, which they will publish in April.
You have the ability to photograph "pretty" subjects like the gorgeous landscapes you've done, but also to capture the essence of those of us who wouldn't think of themselves that way. I can't thank you enough. May God bless your many talents, oh genius one. Yours and His, Latayne C Scott www.latayne.com Re: Re: Do You Take Pictures?

Latayne,
I'm very happy they could use a pic from that portrait shoot. You looked great! Congratulations on the book releases. When are the release dates on your other books? - KL Re: Re: Re: Do You Take Pictures?

The release date for Latter-day Cipher (Moody) is April. Also April for The Mormon Mirage: Third Edition (Zondervan). Whew! I'd better rest up!

I'm probably what would be considered a serious hobbyist, but I've been so busy lately that I haven't had time to pick up my camera. And I love my Kodak Easy Share. It's been with me through thick and ... well, thick. :D
My photo blog is Abandoned Beauties. I get it honestly though. My dad is a photographer, too. He's trying to start a business, but not having any luck. His site is Gardner Photo Graphix Thank you for sharing your multi talented life with the internet. Hugs, Melinda Re: Re: Do You Take Pictures?

Melinda,
My favorites of your photos are the basketball and swing with snow. Very nice. - KL Re: Do You Take Pictures?

I got my first DSLR (Nikon D40x) as a Christmas gift this past year. I've never had any formal training, just reading Popular Photo, and doing a lot of experimenting. This past weekend, I played with increasing the shutter speed and ISO to get better quality without using flash.
I understand some of the basics, rule of thirds, symmetry, angles, but I find I learn best by just taking pictures. On a recent 18-day trip, I ended up with over 3000. Most of them were far from perfect, but I learned what settings worked with my camera. I wouldn't mind having a lens like yours, the depth of field is a great touch especially on your portraits! It doesn't take long to eat up memory space when you are shooting 3000 pictures Jeremy. It's a great hobby, isn't it? - KL
Re: Do You Take Pictures?
I've always been interested in photography, mainly to capture special moments. But recently I've become much more interested in pursuing it as a serious hobby (since purchasing a Sony A350 in April). So far I'm mostly self-taught and do a lot of reading and practicing different shots under varying conditions. I'm considering taking a course offered by New York School of Photography that they offer online. Also, I would highly recommend the book "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. I learned more about aperture, shutter speed, and ISO in about 15 minutes than I had learned in hours of reading elsewhere before I read his book.

Sounds like a good book, Randy. Why don't you bring your Sony with you on our Mediterranean cruise next year and we'll compare photos? Hope all is well your direction. - KL
Re: Re: Re: Do You Take Pictures?
Keith, my wife Becki and I are already saving and hoping that we can come on the Mediterranean cruise. No doubt I will bring my camera and I hope by then I have also been able to acquire the lens I've been wanting, which is the Sony AF 70-200 F2.8 G SSM SAL-70200G. For now I think my favorite lens is my Sony AF 100 F2.8 Macro SAL-100M28, followed closely by the Minolta AF 70-210 F4. I took a few shots of Greg and our praise team (and a couple of Ronnie as well) last Sunday with the Minolta - I didn't have the chance to move around and was really experimenting with the Minolta, but you can see them here Praise and Worship and some of our new worship center construction at First Colony here FCCC Worship Center.
I enjoy your blog and pictures just about every day. Thanks for sharing. Randy Re: Re: Re: Re: Do You Take Pictures?

Randy,
Great shots of Greg in action. He and Ronnie are getting skinny. We could talk gear all day, too. Thanks for your encouragement. The cruise will be great! KL Re: Do You Take Pictures?

From my first visit to your blog I can tell you are a very good photographer. Which camera do you use?
My first DSLR was a Canon 20D 3 years or so ago. I bought a Canon 5D this year. I enjoyed 2nd service at Overland Park this week very much. I just barely made it, leaving Minneapolis at 6am and landing MCI at 9:30am. So I missed your Saturday experience sad to say. Re: Re: Do You Take Pictures?
