On Saturday, the Penicks took us to visit (what remains of) the Middleton Plantation to learn of its place in history. Four generations have made the history books.
The first owner was the president of the Continental Congress.

The second owner was one of the few South Carolinians who signed the Declaration of Independence.
The next generation resident served as a the Governor of South Carolina.
The fourth generation owner signed the ordinance of Secession.
Near the end of the Civil War, General Sherman's army burned this plantation to the ground with only one building remaining.

The grounds and gardens have been beautifully restored. Many outdoor weddings are performed on these grounds, and it appeared that they were preparing for one the day we visited.
