The spiritual skills needed to lead worship will demand that one educate the mind and body in the art of leadership. You cannot lead others to a place you have not gone, nor where you know not the way.

In addition to skills, the gift of infectious spirituality is important.

It's very important. As a worship leader, I should constantly be evaluating my skills for areas of improvement. In my case, I already have musical skills and basic directing skills, but need to work more on leading (not just in the worship itself but in training and encouraging other leaders), planning, and teaching. I like the idea you've passed on about modeling worship for the rest of the congregation.
Of course, I can also see a danger in focusing so much on skill that your leading becomes almost mechanical, and you end up thinking of it as a job you have to get done rather than a heartfelt expression of praise and gratitude toward God. There's also the danger of pride in your own skills, and looking down on others who aren't as skillful. |
