My thinking is along the lines of this quote from Dwight D. Eisenhower: "Plans are nothing, planning is everything.
THEREFORE...
During worship, music theory is nothing; during teaching and practice, music theory is everything...
Of course there are variations: as a bluegrasser, music theory is nothing. As a bagpiper, music theory is everything..

Definitely in song transitions. Knowing relative keys and ordering songs by such makes a such a difference. For example, going from a song in the key of D to F#. Or knowing that your last note in the melody is the tonic of the next key etc... Also, it comes in handy when you're teaching a praise team as they learn difficult intervals and much more. Lots more.

Maybe it's like knowing Greek. You can get to heaven without it but it certainly has moments where it helps.
