Re: Worship Poll: Church Building Acoustics

We spent considerable time, money and planning on our worship center's acoustical engineering. Even with CAD models and sound engineering from the blueprints up, our Worship Center acoustics are acceptable but not outstanding for acappella singing. Most Acoustical Design companies are not acappella friendly, putting the emphasis on dynamic sound systems tailored to the needs of the spoken voice and facilitating sound coming from the stage, i.e. bands, choirs, etc. that are amplified. Our needs of essentially "amplifying the audience sound" is backwards to their line of thinking, in a world where the effort is made to supress the audience and amplify the stage.
There is a "sweet spot" that must occur in the design between a resonant room for acappella singing, and a room that provides acoustics for intelligible spoken word. That balance cannot be perfectly designed by a computer modeled study. This is where the understanding of our Church of Christ "uniqueness" is critical - dont leave the choice of an acoustical engineer to the architect. Study up on this before passing it off to a professional.
